OUR HISTORY

The Tabernacle Church Of God In Christ was organized by Elder Eddie R. Driver Jr., at his home in November 1947.  When Elder Driver and his wife, Sis. Ina P. Driver began their noble work they were joined by five other founding members of Tabernacle. Bro. & Sis. Briggs Williams, Sis. Marie Hunter and Bro. & Sis. Booker Walker.

After several meetings the church was formed and incorporated.  They then began to look for a building for their new church.  They eventually located a tin garage at 5225 San Pedro Street. That building was secured for a rent of $40.00 per month.  This old building was cleaned and remodeled for church usage with the help of Brothers Geeter, Arms and Mack Hunter, with Elder Driver working tirelessly day and night.

The little edifice met with the approval of all who came within its humble shelter.  The Lord blessed Tabernacle with many financial donors, whose names are on the Roll of Honor.  Our first heating system was a wood heater, while our water supply was a stand from the Sparkletts Water Company.

Our first service was held on February 1, the first Sunday in February at 9:45 am, with prayer, Sunday school, Morning service, Y.P.W.W. and an Evening service.

Elder Driver was a visionary Pastor.  Elder Driver began to pray and seek the Lord for the vacant lot on the corner of 55th and San Pedro Streets.  From this humble beginning we were blessed to purchase the lot and little by little, through trials and tribulations, the Lord blessed us to build the present building from the ground up to where it is now.  We enjoy a commendable membership and all the comfortable furnishings you now see and enjoy.

Elder Driver’s vision continued.  He prayed and asked the Lord for a six classroom education building, a kitchen with a dining room, each one complete with an intercom system.

Elder Driver’s vision for Tabernacle continued under the leadership of Elder Lewis Johnson from 1986 until 2013.  Tabernacle is now moving forward under the direction of Pastor, Elder Alfred R Tillman.

The future is very Bright for the Tabernacle Church of God In Christ.
